575 S. Coast Hwy in downtown Encinitas is a historic location of commerce since 1883. A 75 year old building sits at the location now after the demolition and recycling of the original building in 1932. A fifty five year old business, Artistic Floors operates in that location, and after 55 years, it's time for a new sign. The rusted sign above Artistic Floors will be coming down Friday June 29th. Butch Servi, the owner of Artistic floors, will be replacing it with a new sign. If buildings could talk, the stories of Downtown Encinitas would be told for over 120 years at the Artistic Floors location at 575 S. Coast Hwy 101. "Butch has done a great job with the business and tried all that he could do to keep the sign for as long as possible. Unfortunately Mother Nature and safety concerns have conspired against him" Said Peder Norby, Executive Director of DEMA. Norby continues, "The few roof top signs left in Encinitas along 101 speak to an era of pre Interstate 5 days when Hwy 101 was the only route that connected the coastal cites from the Mexican border to Olympia Washington. The signs are important artifacts of our Hwy 101 history and if possible the best should be preserved forever. Unfortunately this sign is so severely rusted that repair and restoration are not possible." Just like the flooring business that has evolved with the times over the past 55 years with new fibers for carpets, engineered and laminated flooring, new finishing for concrete floors, precise machining of wood products and other changes, so too have our business models and consumer taste. It's important that our old building inventory be given the flexibility to keep up with the times and, occasionally, new signage is part of that.
