ABOUT DEMA

The DEMA Main Street approach is a long-term effort to maintain and enhance Downtown Encinitas. Main Street is a revitalization strategy used in over 1,200 cities and 40 states. Developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation's National Main Street Center, the program encourages imaginative use of business and government resources to support local downtown and neighborhood commercial district revitalization efforts. The MainStreet approach is based on four points and relies on eight guiding principles to produce fundamental change in traditional commercial business districts.

The organization's mission is dedicated to the Historic Preservation and revitalization of Historic Downtown Encinitas. "Downtown Encinitas - a place to Live, Work, and Play." It is a non-profit corporation serving a defined program area in Historic Downtown Encinitas and it is a part of a national association of MainStreet Cities. DEMA and its Board of Directors and two full-time executives implement the 4-point program to effect positive change in the program area.

Starting with many small changes taking place over a period of years, Main Street builds local leadership and commitment to care for and manage the area on a permanent basis. Over time, an active and vital Downtown is revealed, attracting more and more investment into the area.

The Main Street "4-Point"approach to revitalization is a comprehensive management strategy which builds on the idea that the total image of an area must be addressed for revitalization efforts to be successful. The approach is a self-help methodology which develops the retail and professional area's necessary market niche; creates a high-quality visual identity unique to that community; and nurtures a cultural ambiance associated with a community's location, appearance and way of life. Four major elements contribute to a downtown's total image; Promotion, Design, Organization and Economic Restructuring.
